When your sister in law wants you to make her something, you do it, right?
She and the ladies at her work discovered that their iced coffees weren’t good for their business’s counters, so i thought, “Oh, let’s make coasters!” However, they had heard of “mug rugs” and wanted one of those, so i decided to put my own spin on it and created the Nicolette Mug Rug, named after the lady who convinced me to do this in the first place π

How to do the Double Crochet Puff Stitch
Yarn over, insert hook into designated stitch. Pull up a loop. Yarn over and insert hook again, pulling up another loop. Yarn over once more and pull through all loops on hook.
How to do the Single Crochet Puff Stitch
Insert hook into designated stitch. Pull up a loop. Yarn over and insert hook, pulling up another loop. Yarn over once more and pull through all loops on hook.
This differs from the double crochet puff stitch in that you do not yarn over before inserting hook into the designated stitch the first time, pretty much the same difference between the normal single and double crochet stitches!
How to do the Half Double Crochet
Yarn over and insert hook into designated stitch. pull up a loop. yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

- ch 17
- In 4th ch from hook, [1 pfst + ch 1 + 1 pfst]. skip 2 ch. [1 pfst + ch 1 + 1 pfst] in next chain. Repeat until only 1 ch remains. dc 1 into remaining stitch. ch 3 and turn your work
- In the ch 1 sp of the βvβ from previous row, [dc 1 + ch 1 + dc 1]. Repeat until you have done this between each v-stitch. You will have a small space between that last v-stitch and the 3 skipped ch from the foundation chain. dc 1 in that last space. ch 1 and turn
- in the ch 1 space of the v-stitch from previous row, [ 1 sc pfst + ch 1 + 1 sc pfst]. Do this in all remaining ch 1 spaces. You should have a space remaining between the final v-stitch and the ch 3 starting chains. sc 1 in that remaining space. ch 2 and turn your work
- In the ch 1 space of the v-stitch from previous row, [1 hdc + ch 1 + 1 hdc]. Repeat in all ch 1 spaces until you have the final pace remaining between the last v-stitch and the ch 1 space from previous row. hdc 1 in that space. ch 3 and turn your work
- in ch 1 space of v-stitch from previous row, [1 dc + ch 1 + 1 dc]. Repeat until you reach the space between the last v-stitch and the ch 2 space from previous row. dc 1 in that space. ch 3 and turn your work
- in ch 1 space of v-stitch from previous row, [1 pfst + ch 1 + 1 pfst]. Repeat until you reach the ch 3 space. Dc 1 in that space. ch 3 and turn your work
- in ch 1 space of v-stitch from previous row, [1 dc + ch 1 + 1 dc]. Repeat until you reach the ch 3 space from previous row. dc 1 in that space. ch 2 and turn your work
- in ch 1 of v-stitch of previous row, [1 hdc + ch 1 + 1 hdc]. Repeat in all ch 1 spaces across. 1 hdc in the last space. ch 1 and turn your work
- [1 sc pfst + ch 1 + 1 sc pfst] in all ch 1 spaces. Sc 1 in last space. ch 3 and turn work
- [1 dc + ch 1 + 1 dc] in all ch 1 spaces. dc 1 in last space. ch 3 and turn work
- [1 pfst + ch 1 + 1 pfst] in all ch 1 spaces. dc 1 in last space.
- ch 1. cut a tail and pull the rest of the yarn through with your hook
- sew in both tails {from the end and from the foundation chain} with yarn needle. Cut off any remaining yarn. This will help to keep your work secure and from coming undone.
Adding the Fringe
- Cut 3 pieces of yarn [can be the same color as the mug rug or a different color to accent it!] 12 different times. You want them to be about 6 inches each.
- In between the vβs and the corner spaces, tie the three pieces of yarn together, pulling them tight so that they are nice and firm.
- Cut the fringe to your desired length or leave them as is, just making sure that they are all close to the same length!
- Once this pattern is done once, itβs easy to do it many times! They are pretty quick and simple to make!
