A Berry Merry Christmas Stocking – Free Crochet Pattern

Christmas is right around the corner (okay, it’s still 2.5 months away..) so now is the time to get started on buying and making all the gifts!

Today, I will show you how to make a gorgeous crochet Christmas stocking in two different sizes. Sound great? Let’s get started!

The first photo is of two small sized stockings. The second photo is the large size!

Here are the differences in size between the two!

Notes

  • pattern is worked in the round
  • the small stocking measures approx. 11.25″ tall
  • the large stocking measures approx. 19.5″ tall
  • the bobble stitch can be switched out with a puff or popcorn stitch if you choose!
  • chains at the beginning of each row do not count as a stitch!
  • acrylic yarn was used for this pattern, but cotton would do fine as well!

Double Front Post Double Crochet – yarn over and insert hook behind the “post” of the double crochet from previous row. draw up a loop. yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook. yarn over and insert hook again behind same post of the double crochet from previous row. draw up a loop. yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook. yarn over and pull through remaining loops on hook.

Bobble Stitch  yarn over and insert hook into stitch. yarn over and pull up a loop. yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook. do this four more times. at the end there should be a total of 6 stitches remaining on your hook. yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on your hook. pull to tighten stitch.

Camel Stitch – yarn over and insert hook into the 3rd loop (in the back of the stitch!) of the hdc from previous row. yarn over and pull up a loop. yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook. [essentially a half-double crochet, just worked into the back loop!]

Half Double Crochet Two Together (Half Double Crochet Decrease) – yarn over and insert hook into stitch. pull up a loop. insert hook into next stitch. pull up a loop. yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

Half Double Crochet Three Together – yarn over and insert hook into stitch. pull up a loop. insert hook into next stitch. pull up a loop. insert hook into next stitch. pull up a loop. yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

The Pattern – Size Small

with white yarn – the toe:
  • form a magic circle. CH 1. HDC 10 into circle. pull closed. SS to 1st HDC to join. CH 1 (if you are not comfortable with the magic circle – CH 3/4. SS to 1st CH to join)
  • HDC 2 into each ST around (20). SS to 1st HDC to join. CH 1
  • HDC 1 into each ST around (20). SS to 1st HDC to join. CH 1. tie & cut off, leaving a tail to sew in
with colored yarn – the foot:
  • tie on & CH 1. HDC 1 into each ST around (20). SS to 1st HDC to join. CH 1

construction of the heel
  • Fold heel in half so that the heel looks to be inside out. This means that when folded, the crease will appear to be on the inside of the stocking instead of the outside. Using either a whip stitch with your yarn needle or SC with your crochet hook, join side together. ch 1 & tie off, leaving a tail to sew in
  • Attach yarn on the other side & do the same. ch 1 & tie off, leaving a tail to sew in.
  • Flip heel so that it is right side in.

  • tie on any spot of heel & CH 1. HDC 1 into each ST around. !! – Decreases may need to be made, especially to attach the corners where foot portion & heel meet. HDC3TOG the 3 spots where the two pieces meet to make one clean ST. If any more decreases need to be made to get back to 20 ST, HDC2TOG in any spot. just make sure to end up with 20 ST. SS to 1st HDC to join. CH 1

  • Decide which direction you want your stocking to face when hanging.
  • On the back: Attach yarn (making sure to hide tail on the inside). CH 15 (or more if you want a longer hook). SS to ST to the left of ST you attached yarn to. CH 1 & tie off, leaving a tail to sew in ends.
  • Hide that tail on the inside as well. pro tip: knot the two tails together once before sewing in ends for extra security.

Sew in ends!
